Warell ERIC Subject Terms     Student Affairs Services Communications Roommates Relationship Freshmen Residential Colleges Dormitories Abstract     Student Affairs professionals see many students struggle with the adjustment of on-campus residential living. One of the most significant struggles in which students encounter is difficulty with roommate communication. The purpose of this qualitative study was to find ways to best prepare first-year college students for the transition to campus residential living. This study revealed potential issues that should be addressed, by first-year on-campus residential students sharing a room and wishing to openly communicate with roommates. Two online surveys were sent to 517 first-year college students, over the age of 18, at a small private liberal arts university in the Midwest. Fifty-four (n=54) participants completed the initial survey with five agreeing to participate in a focus group and three in individual interviews. Triangulation of data showed that the majority of participants preferred meeting with roommates prior to living together. Students suggested that they preferred to attend workshops and/or roommate social gatherings when arriving on-campus rather than receiving written materials that prepare them for residential living prior to coming to college. Findings from this study suggested that male first-year college students were less concerned with residential living preparation while their female counterparts preferred to have a more comprehensive preparation for on-campus residential living. Based on final data analysis, a set of comprehensive Residential Living Guidelines was created to assist first-year college students with this transition which include guidelines for open and honest lines of communication. Finally a list of recommendations for Student Affairs professionals was created to aid first-year students through this transition. Created     2014-12
